AoS Shorts: Your Essential Guide to Age of Sigmar

Australian Age of Sigmar Masters 2018

Welcome to coverage of the Australian Age of Sigmar Masters 2018.  Yesterday was New Zealand, today is Australia.  The Australian Age of Sigmar scene is in amazing health at the moment with large, regular tournaments, a thriving club scene and the jewel in the Crown, Call to Glory at CanCon setting the bar with 220 players in January 2019.  Not only that, but the Aussies share great hobby all over Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and now Twitch.  Right, that’s enough of the hobby crush, on with the coverage.

The Australian Masters this year were held at Club Ashfield in Sydney on the 1st and 2nd of December.  The event was hosted by Clint Mallet, founder of the Heralds of War podcast and TO of Call to Glory at CanCon.

And just before we dive into it, the site is now partnered with Dark Fantastic Mills, producers and purveyors of amazing 3D printed terrain and you can use the code “aos shorts” to get 10% off.  The terrain is super light so shipping worldwide is surprisingly cheap.

Australian Age of Sigmar Rankings 2018

The Australian Age of Sigmar Rankings system is similar to others around the world.  The key points are:

  • Season: 1st November until 31st October the following year.
  • a minimum of 12 players and 3 rounds is required for an event to be included
  • a 40 player, 5 round event is required for the event to earn full points (I.e 100pts for first place)
  • Game sizes of 2000pts and up are eligible for rankings.

The rankings are overseen by a committee of volunteers from each of the states and territories with a significant Age of Sigmar scene.

The committee for 2019 is:

  • Clint Mallet – Queensland
  • Chris Welfare – New South Wales
  • Travis Cooper – Australian Capital Territory
  • Joel McGrath – Victoria
  • Michael Sale – South Australia

For the 2019 Season, the following is the criteria for a Masters invite:

  • This year the event will be 16 Players
  • The previous Master gets an automatic invitation
  • Then filling in from the top placed players in the AMPR up to the 16 places.

The rankings at the end of the 2018 season were:

Australian Age of Sigmar Masters – The Preview Show

Michael from the Doom & Darkness YouTube channel hosted an Australian Masters List Review show with Clint and Rob Symes from the Honest Wargamer.  The three dive into the lists, the first round match-ups and a whole load of background on the Australian Age of Sigmar scene.

LLV and the Honest Wargamer also did a pre-event breakdown of the lists compared to the global meta.

Australian Age of Sigmar Masters

If you’re interested in how the Australian Age of Sigmar scene has grown, despite the challenges of geography, I can highly recommend Clint’s show with Tim MacDivitt of the Mango Mafia on Competitive Age of Sigmar in Australia.  They cover the growth of the competitive scene, the explosion of events and event organisers, the Australian “Meta” and then look at where they think the scene will go in the future.

Episode Breakdown
0:00:00-0:24:54 – Intro, Hobby Progress, Games Played
0:24:58-1:07:18 – Competitive AoS in Australia – Growth of the Scene, Rise of the TO’s, The Australian Meta

Australian Age of Sigmar Masters – The Rounds

The event was streamed over on the Heralds of War Twitch channel, in what I believe to be the first streamed Age of Sigmar event in Australia.

My apologies, for some reason I can’t seem to get the Twitch videos to embed.

Thanks to LLV, there were results spreadsheets produced for each round showing the likely outcome based on the expected win percentage of each army.  Its definitely worth checking out LLV’s work and the Honest Wargamer stat show.
