AoS Shorts: Your Essential Guide to Age of Sigmar

CanCon 2019 – Results and Awards

Hey all, this weekend has been an amazing weekend of Age of Sigmar at CanCon 2019, the world’s (joint) biggest Age of Sigmar tournament ever. In a supreme weekend for Warhammer with CanCon, the UK Masters and Waaaaghpaca, this has easily been the best event I’ve ever attended. Almost 200 wargamers from Australia, New Zealand and the US going hammer and tongs over 6 games.

Be sure to check out all the coverage and live streaming over on the Honest Wargamer and the Heralds of War Facebook page. The Heralds guys, and Clint Mallet the TO in particular, have put on a great event in the 40 degree heat of the Australian summer. There is a hall full of happy gamers as a result of the efforts of Clint and his team.

You can also read my full report of the weekend, and see the score breakdowns and results.

CanCon 2019 Awards

CanCon 2019 was taken out by the man, the champ, Matt Campbell with his Gore Pilgrims list. The only man to take 6 major victories across the weekend and he smashed the secondary objectives as well. The fact that his Gore Pilgrims list with two Bloodthirsters succeeded against a Barak Zilfin Kharadron Overlords list with all the shooting in the world is a testament to Matt’s skill with the army.

Honourable mentions must go to Alex Krohn with his Kharadron Overlords, which won 5 major wins (shooting is back!), as well as the Warherds, Swifthawk Agents, Mixed Destruction, and Scourge Privateer lists which surprised all over the weekend. The Australian scene has a truly unique perspective that sees army stats as a challenge rather than gospel.

CanCon 2019: Chaos Lists!

Hey all, today concludes the series of Doom & Darkness CanCon List Review shows with a review of all the Chaos lists at CanCon 2019. Doom is joined by Hey Woah (@HeyWoah_twitch), Skaven King Dan Brewer and Queen of Nurgle Jemma Shepherd.

Call to Glory at CanCon 2019 in Canberra, Australia will be the largest Warhammer Age of Sigmar event ever held! 220 players in the height of the Australian summer, battling the fires of Aqshy, for matched play supremacy.

And just before we dive into it, the site is now partnered with Dark Fantastic Mills. DFM produces amazing 3D printed terrain and you can use the code “AoS Shorts” to get a further 10% off and support the site.  The terrain is super light so shipping worldwide is surprisingly cheap.

Tasman Cup 2019 – Team NZ vs Team Australia

Hey all, today I have a preview of the Tasman Cup 2019 – an international team event between teams from New Zealand and Australia. The event has been resurrected from the days of Warhammer Fantasy to be played as a preview to Call to Glory at CanCon (the world’s biggest Age of Sigmar event).

In this post, I”ll cover the rules of the event, team selection, lists and introduce the players. You can follow along all the coverage at @AoS_Shorts on Twitter, the guys’ Twitter accounts below and possibly on The Honest Wargamer Twitch stream (if we can get the logistics sorted). At a personal level, I’m really looking forward to catching up with the Aussies before CanCon.

Check out the Doomcap Deeps range for things suitable mushroom-inspired and DFM have special offers on now.

Tasman Cup 2019 – the Rules

The Tasman Cup 2019 will be held on Friday 25 January – the day before Cancon – at the awesome Jolt Games (http://www.joltgames.com.au/) from 4-7pm.  Great 8” tables, excellent terrain and air-conditioned.  This will be followed by a pub dinner and a few drinks.

Charles Black (@ChuckSigmar) kindly volunteered to run the event, arrange a trophy and coordinate preparations. Good on ya Chuck!

Tasman Cup 2019 Team Selection

Team selection was rather laid back for the first running of the event under Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

  • Team New Zealand is just the guys travelling from New Zealand for the event that wanted to participate. No further criteria was applied.
  • Team Australia appears to be based on who is in Canberra on the Friday and who can shit-talk about the kiwis the most.

In no way are the teams intended to be representative of ETC teams or the community at large. So we don’t have to have that debate 😉

Tasman Cup 2019 Rules

The rules pack is simple as it intended to be a warm-up for the players for CanCon:

  • Players are using their CanCon lists
  • CanCon rules for scenarios and realms (see pack and scenarios)
  • 5 players from each country
  • each player plays 1 game only
  • match-ups will be randomly drawn a week in advance (future years will return to a more sophisticated match-up process)
  • Table 1 will be same scenario and realm rules as Game 1 from Cancon, Table 2 same as Game 2 and so on.
  • A major win will be worth 3 points, a minor win will be worth 2 points and a draw will be worth 0
  • The team with the most number of points will be the winner. No tie breakers. In case of a draw Australia retain the Tasman Cup.

Team Australia

So who are the random bunch of Aussies intending to put the Kiwis in their place?

Anthony Magro – Gloomspite Gitz

Anthony Magro, the AoS Coach, YouTuber, Australian Masters commentator and doyenne of the Sydney Age of Sigmar scene. Anthony travels the world for Warhammer, loves his dog and his Free Peoples. 2019 is the year of the Gitz for him. While a Gloomspite Gitz mirror match may not be his preferred outcome, he and Seth would at least have a lot of wrestling to talk about.

Team New Zealand Age of Sigmar

Team New Zealand (or the bunch of blokes travelling to Cancon and keen to take on the Aussies) are:

Daniel Street – Sylvaneth

I spend far more time talking about Warhammer Age of Sigmar than playing at the moment, so am definitely making up the numbers. I’ll be relying on theory hammer, borrowed knowledge from the UK masters and shit talk to get me through the event.

Fraser Baker – Nurgle

Fraser Baker, the man best able to perform on the top tables of New Zealand events still drunk and without sleep (7th in the 2018 rankings). Fraser has been pushing Nurgle around the table since Maggotkin came out so has plenty of experience with the Thicefold. Will the Aussies’ experience against the Thricefold count against us?

Shaun Bates – Stormcast

Shaun Bates, former New Zealand #1, 5th in 2018, and the best Stormcast player in the country. Shaun will be packing the Anvils, rather than Surecharge, and is always happy to talk about the New England Patriots or sports scores. He also has a podcast (Notorious Hammer) and a Grand Tournament (for any Aussies looking to travel).

Seth Cook – Gloomspite Gitz

Seth Cook is our resident American, ass-kicking librarian and master of Destruction. To say Seth is happy about the Gloomspite Gitz and its impact on his Spiderfang is an understatement. If worse comes to worse, I’m sure Seth can body-slam someone through a table.

Lee Wilmot – Sylvaneth

Lee is consistently the best Sylvaneth player in New Zealand, 4th in the rankings last year, and has an unhealthy obsession with ally options. If we can pull his attention away from his current flavour of the month, the Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game, then we can definitely rely on him to smash face.

Blood & Glory Age of Sigmar Championship 2018 Recap

Blood & Glory, one of the UK’s largest Warhammer conventions, was recently held over the weekend of 3 and 4 November 2018.  Over 400 gamers turned up to play Warhammer Age of Sigmar (whether in the 166 player Championship, smaller point events, or in the amazing event of Warhammer Achievements), Warhammer 40,000, Warhammer Underworlds, Horus Heresy, Blood Bowl, Kill Team and more.  This post will cover the Blood and Glory Championship, but future posts will cover the smaller events and Warhammer Achievements.  Here you’ll find the Championship pack, pictures, coverage, awards, results, top lists and more.

As always, check out Dark Fantastic Mills for great 3D printed terrain perfect for wargaming.  Its super versatile and light so worldwide shipping is inexpensive.  Use the “aos shorts” discount code for a further 10% off the already decent prices and also help support the site.  Age of Sigmar

Blood & Glory Age of Sigmar Championship

The Blood & Glory Age of Sigmar Championship was a five round, 2000 point matched play event of Warhammer Age of Sigmar.  You can read the full pack, but the key details were:

  • Terrain warscrolls were in use (for Games Workshop produced terrain), otherwise terrain effects were randomly generated
  • Any of the 18 Battleplans from the Core Rules and Generals Handbook could be played (the 5 selected plans were announced after registration)
  • Each round was played in a different Realm and used the Realm Magic, Realm Commands and Realmscape Features for that round (again, these were announced after registration)
  • The event also used Hidden Agenda secret objectives
  • 150 Battle Points were available – 30 for each Major Win, 25 for a Minor Win, 15 for a Draw, 5 for a Minor Loss and 0 for a Major Loss
  • Bonus Points were awarded for receiving a Vote for Best Opponent (10), receiving a vote for Best Army (10) and for turning your list in on time (10).  These bonus points were capped at 30.
  • You could score a maximum of 25 points for painting, based on a checklist which had 31 points available.
  • The winner was decided on overall score, followed by victory point difference, sports scores, painting score, and finally total kill points (if necessary).

The scenario and realm rules used were:

  • Game 1 – Relocation Orb in Aqshy (Every Step a League)
  • Game 2 – Escalation in Ghyran (Life Springs)
  • Game 3 – Total Commitment in Chamon (Rust Plague)
  • Game 4 – Star Strike in Ulgu (Shadow Realm)
  • Game 5 – Blood and Glory in Shyish (Life Leeaching)

Ben and his team did a great job covering the event over social media through the weekend.  Check out the #BloodandGlory hashtag and Ben Curry’s feed for so many videos and pictures that it would be simply impossible for me to include them all here.

The Dragon Fall GT post will be up in the next day or so.

Age of Sigmar

Bendigo Bush Bash Bonanza

The Bendigo Bush Bash Bonanza was hosted by my favourite Australian wargaming club from the bush, Measured Gaming.  Check out the club profile on the site for all the details about the club.

The Bush Bash was 5 rounds, 2,000 points, GHB18, Malign Sorcery (but not Firestorm).  Check out the full pack.

There was also some fun swag to be had simply by turning up.

Bush Bash

Realms and Malign Sorcery House Rules

The Bush Bash operated under a number of house rules relating to Malign Sorcery and the realms.  These were:

1. Battles will be taken place in the realm of Bogans. This realm has one rule. If you table your opponent by turn 3 it is customary to go to the bar and buy them a drink.

2. Picking a realm while writing a list will allow you access to the command ability(s), artefacts AND will unlock the spells for that particular realm.

3. All wizards in your army will know the realmsphere magic spell from your realm.

4. Wizards may pick ONE additional spell from the realm lore OR your allegiances lore. Eg. A necromancer may know one spell from the Legions of Nagash battletome, while another knows one spell from the Shyish lore.

5. When submitting your army list, make sure to add in the realm spells you will be using. As these are house rules you will not be able to do it on warscroll builder.

The Scenarios

The scenarios were announced on the day and were:

  1. Places of Arcane Power
  2. Better Part of Valour
  3. Relocating Orb
  4. Total Commitment
  5. Focal Points

Bush Bash Results and Awards

Jesse Perkins took out the event with his Daughters of Khaine, as well as picking up best painted.  Luke Ingram got best sports.

Bush Bash

Age of Sigmar Grand Tournament Final Report

So this weekend marked the finale of the official Games Workshop Age of Sigmar Grand Tournament season with the Grand Final held at Warhammer World in Nottingham. Just short of 80 players from across the UK and as far afield as the US met in battle.  Each having qualified at one of the three Age of Sigmar Grand Tournament heats held through 2017 and 2018.

In this post, I cover the Grand Tournament pack, the results and lists where I can get them.  Games Workshop don’t formally publish results and lists (with these usually only being due on the day).

As always, check out Dark Fantastic Mills for great 3D printed terrain perfect for wargaming.  Its super versatile and light so worldwide shipping is inexpensive.  Use the “aos shorts” discount code for a further 10% off the already decent prices.

Age of Sigmar

AoS Grand Tournament Grand Final 2018 Pack

The Age of Sigmar Grand Tournament Grand Final for 2018 was fought over six randomly selected scenarios from the 18 Pitched Battle battleplans.  The scenarios were drawn at the start of the tournament.  Realm rules (including spells), realmscape features and Malign Sorcery were all in play.   So the rounds were:

  1. Total Commitment – Realm of Fire – Clouds of Smoke and Steam
  2. Shifting Objectives – Realm of Life – Lifesprings
  3. Duality of Death – Realm of Metal – Metallic Hinterlands
  4. Knife to the Heart – Realm of Shadow – Perpetual Dark
  5. Better Part of Valour – Realm of Death – Eternal War
  6. Border War – Realm of Light – Gleaming Vista

In terms of scoring, there is always a strong element of painting and sports scores in the overall results.  The scoring system was:

  • major victory – 6 points
  • minor victory – 4 points
  • draw – 2 points
  • loss – 0 points
  • 1 point for each favourite game vote
  • 1 point for each favourite army vote

At the end of the event, you selected two of your opponents to receive favourite game (who you liked playing) votes, and two of your opponents to receive favourite army (what you liked the look of) votes.

Kill points earned was the tiebreaker.  Summoned units did not count towards the total points value of enemy units destroyed and you get the full 2,000 points if you wipe out the enemy.

You can read the full pack and 2018 update for AoS2 for more details.

  8. Dan Bradshaw – Idoneth Deepkin

Social media coverage

As you would expect, the event was streamed all weekend on Games Workshop’s official Twitch channel.  So if you are a subscriber you can go back and watch the games.

However, what truly made the weekend for me following along at home, was all the epic Twitter coverage by the guys in attendance.  It just looked like everyone was having a blast.  So massive thanks to WHTV Dan, Rob Symes of the Honest Wargamer, Darren Watson, Ben Savva, Warchief Baz, the Pro Painted Podcast, Steve Wren, Kanamorf, Nico and countless others.
